This may come as a surprise but I think one of the most memorable day I have experienced so far in Melbourne, was during my two hours as a student volunteer for RMIT's Open Day 2010.
Why?
Before I get to that, let me explain why I took the job up in the first place. I was basically disappointed in myself for not fulfilling my promise to my parents that I would get a part-time job to pay my dues and the university had a compelling offer:
- Certificate of Appreciation
- Letter of Appreciation from the Dean
- Free Movie Ticket
- Free Lunch
But yes, the one thing that is missing from that is pay. I know sounds stupid right that I worked for free? Then again, I only needed to do a couple of hours and I had not received a certificate since my high school days.
When the big day arrived, I was rather annoyed at the fact that the administration for MY particular program was late, nevertheless as time by pass, things got better.
My duties:
- Interact with prospective students & their parents
- Share my experience so far
One of the first things I realized was that I was doing a pretty popular course. Everybody who came in was scared away by the ENTER score, some even asked if there was any alternative pathways. That alone, helped me appreciate how much I actually had.
Secondly, I found that helping other students and sharing with them my "wisdom" made me realized that I actually loved what I was doing. "Do you think that because Professional Communication is more general as opposed to the Journalism degree, would make it more difficult to find a job?" asked a student and I said "That's looking at it from the glass half empty, if you look at it from another perspective such as you are becoming multidisciplinary rather than just skillful at one discipline, doesn't that make you more employable?"
And today, after slightly over a month, I finally received my reward:
(The Living Legend misses the good old days where all he needed to do was sign up for a club to obtain a certificate)
