In June of last year, I got a little taste of the public relations (PR) industry when I was provided with the opportunity of interning with Pat-Lin Communications Sdn Bhd. While I started out going on events, meeting journalists, meeting with clients and even doing the dirty work out in the sense of passing out milk cartons to the public, I was soon brought down to earth. While PR might sound and be presented as a luxurious industry, truth be told there is a lot of behind the scenes work that goes on into making a successful PR campaign.
The second part of my internship last year was to help promote an non-governmental magazine (NGO) by gathering a few interviews with the mainstream media such as The Star and so on. That involved a lot of sitting down in the office and calling the journalist up. Not so fun anymore when they (Journalists) see no newsworthy aspect from your story. Thankfully enough I got the Job done and the end result was a full page story in The Star, Oriental Daily, Reader's Digest and not forgetting an award from the Malaysia's Women's Weekly.
This time around, I wanted to do PR from another organization's point of view. Although Pat-Lin gave me a very conducive and comfortable environment, I feel that by going out of my comfort zone, I will be able to achieve more.
That's where we fast forward a year to the 24th of September 2010. I had an interview with a person from Text 100, a global public relations firm.
And I waas pretty nervous considering the interview was conducted through Skype. I mean how do you prepare for an interview through such a medium? Do you do it formally or casually?
Long story short, the interview I felt went well and I was offered the internship beginning next year January.
