Limkokwing University: The Best Decision I Ever Chanced Upon

Somehow or another, I never found the need to attend "college talks" or well you know, one of those advise forums from industry experts, lecturers and so on which is probably why I chose Limkokwing University by a flip of a coin!

Yes, I'm not bull shitting you as one of the contributing reasons to why I ended up at Limkokwing University was due to a 20sen coin that told me to go there! I guess that's the problem when you aren't really sure of what you see yourself doing in the future, you tend to procrastinate for as long as you can until finally a decision is made.

In addition to that, once you fail maths for almost 18 years of your life, you come to realise that without a good mathematic background or base, your eliminated from a lot of fields such as engineering, computer science, acturial science and many more. That left me with a huge disadvantage as my dream of becoming a millionaire by 30 was now looking dimmer and dimmer, then again I was never really one to be such a "professional".

After much thinking and nagging from my parents, I decided why not take the easy way out and do mass communication? I mean at that time it was either law, business or mass communication? Easy choice much? Moreover, the old man was also a journalist so why not follow his footsteps but little did I know, that my old man was totally against the idea of me entering such a low-paying field. Afterall, how do you expect to be a millionaire by 30 if the average earnings of a journalist is only RM2.5k a month?

Nevertheless, I persuaded him that it was the right thing for me to do and due to his never ending fear of me being a college drop out if I had chose something extremely hard, he agreed. Now the problem was where to study mass communication? KDU? Taylors? or Sunway?

Me being the typical "after high school but before college kid" wanted to expand my network of friends and go to a college where not many of my old schoolmates were going, boy was that a bittersweet moment!

So that helped me cut out a lot of colleges such as Taylors and Sunway in particular. So it was left between KDU, Help or Limkokwing and I was almost certain that KDU would be my calling but then came this fantastic counsellor by the name of Khastury. She was the manager for International Development at Limkokwing and she told my dad this exact words "Sir, if you sign up today not only will your son receive a 20% discount off his entire cost throughout his time with us, I will also give you a free semester for your son at our London campus!".

Now when somebody tells you that what do you say? No?? Well my dad from being very skeptical towards Limkokwing suddenly had an open mind towards the possibility of me pursuing my pre-university course there! The next thing I knew, the old man was making a few phone calls here and there to see if it was worth taking a risk by sending me to Limkokwing and all said the same thing, " Limkokwing is good for Digital Film & Television" which were one of my degree options once I had successfully completed my foundation course.

Instead of helping me make a decision, my dad threw me the ball and said it's your education, its your life, it's your choice! As long as I can afford it, go ahead and that is where the flipping of a coin incident happen and yadayadayada as off February 2009, I was an official Limkokwing University of Creative Technology student!

However on the 15th of January 2010, a year after signing up for Limkokwing, I decided that our journey has ended and it was time we depart. It was not an emotional departure as I knew that one day, just one day, I will return to Limkokwing but maybe not as a student and for sure not as a staff but as a proud man who once studied there.

When I first joined the institution, many asked me why of all places Limkokwing? I didn't had an answer then but today if they ask again, I would say it's because of everything it's not! It's not your everyday university where you see the same people over and over again, whereas at Limkokwing we have over 9000 students from various countries all around the world and there is not a day where I do not meet somebody new.

In addition to that, Limkokwing is the only university I know that gives me the option to study at London, Bali, Cambodia and even Africa! Yes it might not sound appealing now but as you grow older, you realise that being expose to different cultures actually helps you understand the world just a little bit more.

Last but not least, in spite of everything, Limkokwing University of Creative Technology was my home for the past year. I adore everything about it and especially the people there!

To all my classmates, lecturers and other friends that I have made, I say thank you and I will miss you guys!

(The Living Legend wonders if the RMIT experience will be just as enriching as LUCT)
